Welcome to Grade 6

My name is Mrs. Mbonda and my goal is to have every student want to come to school each day.

This goal is often achievable for me because of the fun, supportive and unique classroom environment I welcome my students to create. I love exposing my students to class trips and guest speakers because these are experiences money can’t buy. In the past this has included a trip to a local nursing home to discuss the differences of electricity use between generations, a shopping spree at Fabricland to make blankets for a student initiated charity, and even an interactive presentation by a Metis reality TV-star!

Students leave my class knowing that I am extremely interested in travel, Media and issues related to First Nations and the Environment. I studied International Development in University and hope to bring a worldly view into my classroom daily. I supported Cameroon in the Soccer World Cup because my husband is from that country.

When not at school, I am close by at the library or local parks with my two sons Griffin (age 7) and Myers (age 4). They love coming to see mom at school for the Winter and Spring concerts, so look out for them and say hi. Griffin will feel special if you could practice your French speaking with him.

A question that I love asking new people I meet is, "What year of your primary education did you love best?" The answer I get most often is, "Grade 6!". Try it, and you will see what I mean. As a grade 6 teacher at Altona Forest this year, I promise to make this a very memorable educational experience, so they too love it best!

Need help from PARENTS!!!

1. Do you need financial help with Claremont??? PLEASE let me know. We want all kids to come!!!!!!

2. As part of our class project we have asked other Pickering school to collect soccer uniforms. I need help collecting the collected uniforms from all Pickering schools. They will be ready to be picked up in the school hallways Nov 14 at 1pm until Nov 15 at 3pm. The idea would be to pick up the donation and drop in off at Altona. Then on nov 16 SECOND KICKS will pick them up from Altona.

So, can you help pick up some uniforms????????

3. We have a large grant from Metro to buy ingredients to cook and learn how to use healthy foods to snack and eat. So, can you please prepare to teach us how to make something???? Start to think about it.....information coming at the interview......

I believe in life long learning and I would love to learn from you.

I have an open door for you sharing your specialties with me and both grade 6 classes.

Want to lead us on a nature walk, bring in a piece of machinery, or chat with us about your immigration experience?

Come share your passion and expertise by signing up for a one hour session where we ask you questions about your job, passion or life story.

As the teacher I will do all the necessary follow up activities, but authentic voices in the classroom is invaluable to me.

Math

The curriculum guides my instruction in mathematics. Using the three part lesson, students are provided with rich problem solving questions to get them thinking. Most of this work will be done in class. Students will be encouraged frequently to bring their "scrapbook" of math problem home to share with you their thinking.

Here is what we are working on:

- patterning diagnostic to be able to plan at board office to teach to specific needs in class (  ICLIPPS project)

- geometry, shape characteristics

-measure and draw angles up to 180, using a protractor

Patterning returns Nov 5

- looking at relationships in patterns and the use of tables, graphs and expressions to see the patterns and their relationship

Social Studies

What does it mean to be Aboriginal in Canada?

What are the cultural traditions, values, histories and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples in Canadian society?

What are the inaccurate misconceptions, biases, stereotypes that exist in Canadian society around Aboriginal peoples?

Our goal is to develop cultural proficiency and awareness of the lenses through which we see others …
